Jordyn Jay: Empowering Black Trans Artists
BTFA: Uplifting Black Trans Art 🎨✨
In the spirit of Pride and empowerment, we celebrate the incredible work of BTFA (Black Trans Femmes in the Arts) and its visionary founder, Jordyn Jay. Through this inspiring conversation with Angelica Ross, we explore the transformative power of art in creating a world where Black trans femmes not only survive but thrive. Jordyn's passion and dedication to uplifting marginalized voices reveal the profound impact of community, creativity, and love. Together, they discuss the journey of BTFA, its mission, and the vital work it does to foster creative liberation for Black trans artists.
The Spark That Ignited BTFA
Jordyn Jay's journey to founding BTFA was born out of a deep realization during her time at NYU under the guidance of Dr. Marta Morena Vega, a renowned figure in arts and culture. Jordyn reflected on the support systems available for the trans community, which often centered on survival essentials like housing, healthcare, and food. While critical, she asked a pivotal question:"What about when we survive? What's next?"
This question led to the creation of BTFA—a space where Black trans femmes could imagine lives filled with joy, hope, and creativity. Jordyn recognized that art has the power to uplift, inspire, and provide a sense of purpose, making it essential to the journey of thriving.
Creative Liberation: Beyond Representation
For Jordyn, creative liberation means moving beyond the confines of representational art. She envisions a world where Black trans art is celebrated not solely for its representation but for its inherent value."I want people to stop looking at Black trans art and saying, 'Oh, look at how great this is because it's representative of a community' and instead say, 'Look at how great this is because of the value of the work itself.'"
Jordyn emphasizes the importance of creative freedom, where Black trans artists can experiment, make mistakes, and continue to grow—just as their peers in the broader entertainment industry do. This vision is key to a future where Black trans creatives are afforded the same opportunities to thrive and innovate.
BTFA’s Pillars of Support
BTFA stands on several foundational pillars, each designed to uplift the Black trans femme community:
Mutual Aid:Rooted in the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, BTFA's mutual aid efforts ensure safety and emergency support for Black trans people. This includes providing $50,000 annually to cover housing, healthcare, and other critical needs.
Artist Development:BTFA offers workshops, performance coaching, and collaborative opportunities to help artists refine their craft. From building portfolios to learning new skills, BTFA ensures artists are prepared for success.
Residency Programs:Artists in residence receive funding and support to develop their work over three to twelve months, with their bills covered so they can focus on their art.
BTFA Productions:Fully funded, staffed productions bring new, original works by Black trans fem artists to life, showcasing their talent and stories to the broader community.
The Power of Community and Collaboration
Jordyn's unwavering commitment to community is at the heart of BTFA’s success. She shares,"These are not just clients or constituents for me. These are my chosen family."By remaining deeply connected to the artists BTFA supports, Jordyn ensures the organization stays grounded and focused on its mission.
Angelica Ross, a trailblazer in her own right, reflects on the importance of collaboration in amplifying marginalized voices. "What does it look like for us to have power and own our narratives? It’s by doing this—working together and building each other up."

The True Meaning of Pride
As Pride Month reminds us to celebrate and reflect, Jordyn shares a powerful message:"You cannot say that you are celebrating LGBTQIA pride if you are not uplifting the folks that are being targeted the most."Pride is a call to action to support those within our community who face the greatest challenges and ensure their voices are heard and celebrated.
Looking Ahead
BTFA’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, creativity, and collective action. Jordyn’s vision of a future where Black trans femmes are free to express themselves and thrive serves as a beacon of hope for all. As Angelica Ross beautifully put it,"This is the way forward."
