HOA Drama: Turning Conflict into Growth 🌟
Life often throws us unexpected challenges, but how we respond can make all the difference.I share a deeply personal story about my HOA drama and how I transformed a frustrating situation into an opportunity for growth and peace. Through my experience I am reminded of the power of resilience, creativity, and community.
The Potluck Fire Vision: A Dream Meets Resistance
I had a dream—a vision of using my home to create a space for community-building events under a new brand, Potluck Fire. These events, including open mic nights and workshops, aimed to foster connection, creativity, and inclusion. However, my HOA had other plans. After discussing her ideas on her podcast I received a certified letter from my HOA, citing regulations and even attempting to charge me attorney fees. The message was clear: "Wrap it up." But I wasn’t about to let this setback extinguish my passion.
As I read through the HOA’s claims, I realized I actually hadn’t violated any rules. My initial instinct was to fight the system. “They got the right one and the wrong one,” as I said in the video, ready to stand my ground. Yet, something deeper encouraged me to pause and reflect.
From Confrontation to Reflection: Lessons in Letting Go
I turned to my Buddhist practice for guidance, drawing strength from a passage in "Buddhism Day by Day" by Daisaku Ikeda: “Failing to translate the teaching of Buddhism into action is to go against Buddhism's fundamental spirit.” This inspired me to approach the situation with grace rather than conflict. Instead of fighting back, I decided to channel my energy into creating boundaries that honored both my home and my creative goals.
“I’ve worked hard for my home—it’s my refuge,” I reflected. I realized it was time to separate my personal sanctuary from my community projects. This shift in perspective not only brought me peace but also opened doors to collaborate with like-minded individuals, such as Charlene Carruthers and Mary Hooks, who were already creating similar community spaces in the same city.
Amidst the HOA drama, I was able to celebrate several significant milestones. An inspiring run in the play "Freedom Riders" at Harlem Stage, an experience that was truly transformative. Additionally, I was able to update my passport to reflect my accurate gender marker, and now I can travel the world without issues.
My updated passport symbolizes my readiness to embark on global adventures. With plans to visit Africa and other destinations I aims to inspire change, connect with communities, and continue my work to empower marginalized folks around the world.
